A Journey of Service
About Marcella Belcastro
My Journey
Every path has a beginning, but some journeys unfold in ways we never expect. Mine began in service, coordinating events and supporting others behind the scenes. Over time, that path led me to a vocation rooted not just in logistics, but in compassion, presence, and care.
What follows is the story of how I came to serve families during life’s most tender moments. It’s a journey shaped by experience, guided by empathy, and grounded in a deep respect for every individual I’ve had the privilege to walk alongside.
If we are willing to trust, Life will always lead us to that place where we can best serve.
My Foundation in Service and Coordination
In 1994, I began working for a hire car company as an events coordinator and chauffeur. During this time, I had the privilege of working with a diverse array of prominent individuals, including renowned international and local entertainers.
In 1996, I played a key role in organising the transport logistics for the grand opening of Planet Hollywood in Sydney. During that same year, I collaborated with Warner Music Australia, coordinating transportation for their clientele.
My Journey into Funeral Service Began Unexpectedly
Whilst in event coordination, I was asked to assist with transport for a funeral service. Despite my initial hesitation about handling such an emotional responsibility, I said yes.
When I arrived at the church and was entrusted with transporting the immediate family, something profound happened. As I drove away after safely delivering them to their destination, I felt an unexpected sense of fulfillment. I realised that, in some small way, I had contributed to supporting a grieving family during their most difficult time.
The family's gratitude, conveyed through the funeral director, led to an offer to work with their funeral home. What I didn’t realise at the time, was that this moment marked the beginning of my career as a funeral director.
Stepping into Service and Leadership
Over my career, I've had the privilege of working with diverse funeral companies, eventually being promoted to leadership roles and conducting hundreds of services. One of my early funerals involved assisting with the arrangements for the funeral of Michael Hutchence, the iconic lead singer of INXS. My professionalism and confidentiality earned me a mention in the book, Just a Man.
I’ve also had the honour of arranging and conducting funerals for other prominent individuals, always with the utmost discretion and respect for their families. These experiences deepened my understanding of the delicate balance between public legacy and private grief and reinforced my commitment to serving with integrity and compassion.
In 2002, during the aftermath of the Bali bombings, I had the profound responsibility of assisting numerous families grappling with the tragic loss of loved ones. Bearing witness to their courage and vulnerability shaped my approach to care, which is grounded in empathy, clarity, and quiet strength.
Service, Spirit, and Legacy
After stepping away from funeral service to focus on my family, I felt an undeniable calling to return to the funeral industry following my father’s death in 2017. I truly believe he played a part in my return because soon after, I was offered a position as a funeral director, conductor, and leader with a Sydney-based funeral company. This brought me back to the work that, in my heart, I always planned to return to.
Here, I continued to serve families from different cultural backgrounds. I also had the privilege of working alongside representatives from the Vatican, including direct liaison with the Vatican’s funeral director, an experience that deeply affirmed the importance of cultural and spiritual sensitivity in every aspect of care. Additionally, I was honoured to be involved in the National Relics Pilgrimage of Saints Thérèse, Zélie, and Louis in Sydney, a moment that further enriched my understanding of faith and tradition.
Over the years, I've arranged and conducted hundreds of funerals, including for families in local and broader communities, church leaders, prominent individuals, and state figures, always with a commitment to dignity, reverence, and respect. Serving, guiding, and supporting families when they are confronted with the loss of a loved one is, for me, both a privilege and a responsibility.
These experiences continue to shape the way I serve today, with reverence, empathy, and unwavering commitment.
“For me, this is more than a profession—it is a calling. Supporting families during what can be their most difficult experiences, with respect, compassion, and unwavering dedication, is always a privilege and my highest priority.”
